A no-spend October means 31 days of buying only what you decided in advance was essential. The version that survives past the second week has written rules, a plan for Halloween, and a way of counting that doesn't make one slip erase the month.
Most no-spend challenges are built like an exam: a grid of 31 boxes, a tick for every clean day, and a red X for the day you bought the coffee. The trouble with that grid is what it does on day 9. One X, and the remaining 22 boxes stop feeling like a challenge and start feeling like a formality. Day 9 is where the grid starts working against you.
Here's a way to run it that counts what you actually did.
What is a no-spend challenge?
A set period, usually a month, where you stop all non-essential spending. Bills, rent and groceries carry on. Takeout, impulse buys and "it was on sale" don't. The point isn't the money saved in one month, although that's nice. It's noticing which purchases were decisions and which were reflexes.
What are the rules for no-spend October?
Write them down before you start. Rules made up mid-month always lose to a checkout button.
- List your essentials. Rent or mortgage, bills, transport, medicine, and groceries from a list. Anything already committed (a subscription you've decided to keep, a birthday you've already planned) goes here too.
- List your no's. Be specific: takeout and delivery, clothes, gadgets, "treat" coffees, in-app purchases, anything bought from an ad.
- Plan Halloween now. It's Saturday 31 October this year, the last day of the challenge. Decide the costume and candy budget up front and put it on the essentials list, so it's a plan rather than a failure.
- Use a 48-hour wishlist. Want something? Write it down with the date. If you still want it on 1 November, it was a decision.
- Remove the easy paths. Log out of the shopping apps you use most and turn off their notifications for the month.
- Decide what a slip means before it happens. This is the rule most challenges skip, and it's the one that matters.
What happens if you slip on a no-spend challenge?
On a perfect-or-fail calendar, a slip is the end: the month is "failed", so you might as well buy the other thing too. That's the all-or-nothing trap, and it turns one coffee into a lost month.
Try counting it differently. Instead of asking "was October perfect?", ask "how many days without?"
Say you slip on 12 October. On the grid, that's a red X and a ruined month. Counted as days without, it's an 11-day run, one slip, and a new run that reaches 19 days by 31 October. That's 30 of 31 days without non-essential spending. Which of those two stories makes you want to keep going on the 13th?
Is it too late to start no-spend October?
No. It's 2 October, so there are 30 days left, and a run counted as days without starts whenever you start it. If you want a full 31, start on 1 November and call it No-spend November. Nobody's checking the name.
How to track it in Last.
Last. has a mode made for this. Create a Without thing (call it "Impulse buys" or "Takeout", whatever's actually costing you) and pick the day your run started. The number counts up by itself. There's no daily check-in to forget, because it counts days since the last time it happened, not boxes you've ticked.
If you do slip, tap It happened. The current run ends and is kept, a new one begins, and every run so far is drawn side by side in Run Rhythm. Milestones along the way earn a print. There's no red X anywhere.

Put it on your Home Screen as a widget and you'll see the number every time you unlock your phone, which is usually right before you open a shopping app. Last. is free for up to 7 things, with no ads.
What about 1 November?
Keep the run going or stop. Either way, October's runs stay where they are. A no-spend month you can look back on, run by run, beats a calendar you threw away on day 9.
FAQ
What are the rules of a no-spend challenge?
Only essentials you've listed in advance (housing, bills, transport, medicine, groceries from a list). Everything else waits. Write the rules down before day 1, including what you'll do if you slip.
Can you buy groceries on a no-spend challenge?
Yes. Groceries from a list are essentials. Takeout and delivery usually aren't.
What if I slip up during a no-spend month?
Record it and keep going. Count days without rather than perfect days: one slip ends a run, not the challenge.
How many days are left in no-spend October?
As of Friday 2 October 2026, 30 days including today. The challenge ends on Saturday 31 October.
